Typical Mendenhall Glacier Weather

The best time to visit the Mendenhall Glacier is May through September, when the weather is mildest, though its trails and outdoor areas are open year-round. In the summer months, you can expect daytime highs in the 60s, though some days the temperature can rise to the upper 70s. It rains more days than not in the Juneau area, so anticipate clouds and rain during your visit (but don't be discouraged - overcast days can make for the best photos!). The Mendenhall Glacier is located just north of Juneau, in the Tongass National Forest, and is part of the Juneau Icefield.

How to Get There

Enjoy one of our scenic Mendenhall Glacier Tours. You can also take a taxi from downtown Juneau (12 mi), Juneau Airport (5 mi), or the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal (7 mi).

Visitor Center Hours

The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is open daily from May through September from 8:30am - 7:30pm. From October through March, it's open Fri-Sun from 10:00am - 4:00pm. It is closed in April.

How Long to Stay

You should plan to spend at least 45 minutes at the Mendenhall Glacier, though you could easily spend a half or full day, exploring trails, enjoying the views, spotting wildlife, and taking photos.
