Excursion Overview

Gold Rush History and Local Highlights

On this city and summit tour, you'll drive up the Klondike Highway which parallels much of the Gold Rush Trail of 1898 where stampeders struggled to climb carrying their ton of goods during winter snows. Along the route are spectacular vistas of steep mountains of coastal rainforest and historical stops, including Brackett Wagon Road, Pitchfork Falls, Moore Creek Bridge, and views of the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and watch for wildlife.

Upon cresting the White Pass Summit (3292 feet, 1003 meters), take in views of the sub-arctic alpine tundra of the 'Tormented' Valley, with its crystal blue Summit Lake and snowcapped mountains. At the US/Canadian border, have a photo opportunity with the Welcome to Alaska sign!

Our return trip takes us to the Skagway Scenic Overlook, which offers a panoramic view of the town, harbor, and cruise ships. Before returning to your ship, drive through the historic downtown streets including a stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery where we'll visit our infamous outlaw, Soapy Smith, and hear tales of the early pioneers. Your guide will bring the Gold Rush to life with many stories of the history of the era.

We really enjoyed this tour up to the Alaskan/Canadian border. We made several photo stops and even traveled parallel to the White Pass train for much of the ride. Beautiful scenery!

This excursion was great, enjoyed climbing the mountain, skipped the cemetery as most of the people did not want to stop there, Beverly was excellent in answering questions and guided us and explained all the main points. Did not stop too much going up as too much fog, but we did stop at Alaska sign and took pictures, took lots of pictures and videos from inside the bus from the windows, did cross the border into Canada to the Yukon where the gold rush started, stopped at all stops on the way back as the fog cleared, again Beverly was great and very informative, she dropped us back in downtown Skagway where we could shop before going back to the boat which was a short walk.

Garrett did a great job of sharing about Skagway history, adding local color and answering questions. A great way to see Skagway and go up to the summit.
